PMSG is formed in the endometrium of the mare in the “endometrial cups” (EC) from the 38th – 130th days of gestation. These EC are produced by the passage of foetal trophoblast cells from the chorionic belt. It has a stimulating effect on the hormone-forming receptors of the male and female gonads. In female animals follicles are formed and follicles mature with increasing endogenous oestrogen production in the ovaries. The ovulation is triggered by the entry of the brunstone and the pituitary release of LH.
